John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word (Jesus Christ), and the Word (Jesus Christ) was with God, and the Word(Jesus Christ) was God.

Logos (Greek word λόγος The Gospel of John identifies Jesus as the incarnation of the Logos, through which all things are made. The gospel further identifies the Logos as god (theos), providing scriptural support for the trinity. It is this sense, the Logos as Jesus Christ and God, that is most common in popular culture.
  • 1). He was already in existence at ‘the beginning’ when God created the heavens and the earth (John 1.1) - ‘in the beginning the Word was already in existence’.
  • 2). It was through Him that the universe was created - ‘all things were made by Him’ (John 1.3)
  • 3). He is the life-giving Word Whose life gives light to men (John 1.4) - ‘in Him was life, and the life was the light of men’.
  • 4). He is the One Who ‘became flesh and dwelt among us’ (John 1.14)

When it comes down to it, we really all just want to know the truth. You will find no greater truth than the words in the Bible.

"Behold, Thou dost desire truth in the innermost being, and in the hidden part Thou wilt make me know wisdom." - Psalm 51:6

"The sum of Thy word is truth, and every one of Thy righteous ordinances is everlasting." - Psalm 119:160

"And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth." - John 1:14

"And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John 8:32

"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give thanks; but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures." - Romans 1:18-23

"This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus." - 1 Timothy 2:3-5

"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.'" - John 14:6

"In Him, you also, after listening to the message of the truth, the gospel of your salvation -- having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit or promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory." - Ephesians 1:13-14

Why JESUS is the Way, the Truth, and the Life!

Throughout the history of mankind, never has there been a person who has had so much effect and influence on the course of human events than Jesus Christ. The birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ has not only had a profound impact on the course of human events; it has also changed the lives of countless men and women throughout history, and continues to do so today. Why? Jesus Christ said "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me." What exactly does this mean? Why is this of any significance to us today? When Jesus Christ said "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me," he was declaring that He was God. He is The Way for eternal life - not "a" way - but the ONLY way.

The Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword.

When Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the garden, sin entered the world.

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Romans 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

    Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

1 John 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

    penaltysin.jpg

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Not just physical death but something far more serious - SPIRITUAL DEATH - in hell.

Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

To cover the sin of Adam and Eve, the BLOOD of an innocent lamb was shed. (Genesis 3:21)

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

Friend, Jesus Christ shed his BLOOD on the cross to pay the penalty for your sins!

Revelation 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

Revelation 1:6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

What can wash away my sins????

    bloodofjesus.jpg

Not a church membership, not sacrement, not bapstism, not good works,

Hebrews 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission."

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

Just as there are physical laws that govern the physical universe, so are there spiritual laws which govern your relationship with God

God LOVES you and offers a wonderful PLAN for your life.

(References contained on this Home Page are linked to the actual verses from the Bible and should be read in context wherever possible.)

    God's Love
"God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life" (John 3:16 NIV).

    God's Plan
[Christ speaking] "I came that they might have life, and might have it abundantly" [that it might be full and meaningful] (John 10:10).

Why is it that most people are not experiencing the abundant life?
    Because...

    2.jpg

Man is SINFUL and SEPARATED from God. Therefore, he cannot know and experience God's love and plan for his life.

    Man Is Sinful
"All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).
Man was created to have fellowship with God; but, because of his stubborn self-will, he chose to go his own independent way, and fellowship with God was broken. This self-will, characterized by an attitude of active rebellion or passive indifference, is an evidence of what the Bible calls sin.

    Man Is Separated
"The wages of sin is death" [spiritual separation from God] (Romans 6:23). Heaven and Hell are real destinations and the ultimate choice is ours. "... those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus ... will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord ..." (2 Thessalonians. 1:8,9; NIV)

    law2.jpg

This diagram illustrates that God is holy and man is sinful. A great gulf separates the two. The arrows illustrate that man is continually trying to reach God and the abundant life through his own efforts, such as a good life, philosophy, or religion - but he inevitably fails.

The third law explains the only way to bridge this gulf...

    3.jpg

Jesus Christ is God's ONLY provision for man's sin. Through Him you can know and experience God's love and plan for your life.

    He Died in Our Place
"God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).

    He Rose From the Dead
"Christ died for our sins...He was buried...He was raised on the third day, according to the Scriptures...He appeared to Peter, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred..." (1 Corinthians 15:3-6).

He Is the Only Way to God
"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me'" (John 14:6).

    law3.jpg

This diagram illustrates that God has bridged the gulf which separates us from Him by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross in our place to pay the penalty for our sins.

It is not enough just to know these three laws...

    4.jpg

We must individually RECEIVE Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord; then we can know and experience God's love and plan for our lives.

    We Must Receive Christ
"As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name" (John 1:12)

    We Receive Christ Through Faith
"By grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast" (Ephesians 2:8,9).

When We Receive Christ, We Experience a New Birth
    (Read
    John 3:1-8.)

We Receive Christ by Personal Invitation
[Christ speaking] "Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any one hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him" (Revelation 3:20).

Receiving Christ involves turning to God from self (repentance) and trusting Christ to come into our lives to forgive our sins and to make us what He wants us to be. Just to agree intellectually that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He died on the cross for our sins is not enough. Nor is it enough to have an emotional experience. We receive Jesus Christ by faith, as an act of the will.

    law41.jpg

    law4.jpg

These two circles represent two kinds of lives:

Which circle best describes your life?
Which circle would you like to have represent your life?

The following explains how you can receive Christ:

You Can Receive Christ Right Now by Faith Through Prayer
    (Prayer is talking to God)

God knows your heart and is not so concerned with your words as He is with the attitude of your heart. The following is a suggested prayer:

"Lord Jesus, I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of the throne of my life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be."

Does this prayer express the desire of your heart?

If it does, I invite you to pray this prayer right now, and Christ will come into your life, as He promised.

    Why Witness?

1.It brings glory to God -- John 15:8.

2.The Lord commands us to witness -- Matthew 4:19; John 15:16.

    3.Men are lost without Christ -- 1 John 5:11,12.

4.Men are receptive to the gospel in most countries. Hundreds of thousands of surveys taken throughout the world indicate that an average of one out of two to one out of four, depending on the country, will receive Christ the first time they hear the good news of God's love and forgiveness -- Colossians 1:6; 1 Thessalonians 1:5.

5.The love of Christ constrains us -- 2 Corinthians 5:14. This love is expressed not by the emotions, but by the will. One should never wait for an emotional impression to share one's faith in Christ.

(e.g. Jesus faith love, or God of my salvation, or believ* ever*)

Cast all your anxiety on him because he
    cares for you.
    (
    1 Peter 5:7 NIV)

Yes, Jesus cares for you and me. Not just for our salvation which of course is the most important since it is eternal, but also for our daily cares.

First, for the salvation He provided, which is a gift from God. Next, for even our daily cares. A couple of verses from scripture point to this:

“Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them. Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’”
    (Matthew 19:13-14 NIV)
“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
    (Matthew 11:29-30 NIV)

The Lord came the first time to give us rest. He loves us. He did not come the first time to judge, that is reserved for His second coming. So I urge you to come to know the Lord in a special way, and receive His love.

Salvation. There is only one way to Heaven, and that is through the person of Jesus Christ. The Bible says that Jesus died once for all that we may be saved. The Bible says that salvation can be found in no one else and not by works, lest any man boast. This means we must, through faith and belief in our hearts of what Jesus did for us, confess our sins to Christ and offer up to Him our lives as living sacrifices, at which time we are forgiven and enter into an eternal relationship with Christ. This is the only way to salvation.

The Greek word translated “Word” in this passage is Logos, and it was common in both Greek philosophy and Jewish thought of that day. For example, in the Old Testament the “word” of God is often personified as an instrument for the execution of God’s will (Psalm 33:6; 107:20; 119:89; 147:15-18). So, for his Jewish readers, by introducing Jesus as the “Word,” John is in a sense pointing them back to the Old Testament where the Logos or “Word” of God is associated with the personification of God’s revelation. And in Greek philosophy, the term Logos was used to describe the intermediate agency by which God created material things and communicated with them. In the Greek worldview, the Logos was thought of as a bridge between the transcendent God and the material universe. Therefore, for his Greek readers the use of the term Logos would have likely brought forth the idea of a mediating principle between God and the world.

Veritas is Latin for truth. John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

    Who Is Jesus?
An Identification of Christ Via Man's Redemption

    I. The Position of Man and the Justice of God

From nearly the beginning of man's existence, he has been a polluted creature. From the moment Adam gave his nature over to rebellion, man's bloodline has been corrupted. We, all being sinners, owe a fantastic debt. God, being just, must see the demanded price of man's debt paid in full. That price (the price of reconciliation with the unblemished, incorruptible King of Creation) is eternal separation.

Now only two possibilities can satisfy God's justice in this regard — that is, the hope of payment can only come from two possible sources. Since the debt must be paid — God cannot simply remove the penalty — and the price cannot be justly laid on the head of another without his consent, only two options remain: 1) one man could volunteer to take the punishment of another onto his own head or 2) God could take the debt upon Himself. Yet while either of these possibilities will satisfy God in His justice, justice is not the only requirement to be filled.

    II. Purity and the Sacrifice

When we inquire of the stature of any possible benefactor, we first find the potential substitute must actually have the ability to pay the debt. If two men are led to the gallows for capital crimes, the first stands in no position to take the penalty of the second upon himself as well as his own. So is the case with man. All of us have "fallen short" and are in no position to offer ourselves to the hangman in the place of another. This fact narrows the list of potential candidates to the unfallen angels and God Himself (both of whom are holy and free from the penalty of sin).

    III. Infinitude and the Atonement

Now to further and finally narrow our range of possibilities, the only way that any potential substitute's sacrifice could be sufficient is if that substitute were infinite. The sacrifice of any one perfect being would only suffice to cover one man's sin — and then, only one of that man's sins. Jesus Christ died for the world — a world that is even now sinning. For that to be accurate, He would have to be infinite. But there can only be one infinite — and that is God Himself. Therefore, if Christ did truly pay for sins as an atonement, He must be God.

    IV. Only a Man's Blood

Looking further at the redemption of man, we find one final clue to the identity of Christ; we must focus on His method of payment. As an example, imagine a man is incarcerated in an American debtor's prison and the Emperess of Venus wanted to pay my debt and free me. Suppose she arrives with millions of dollars in cold, hard Venusian cash to make the payment. Her payment would not be accepted in that form; such debts must be paid in the coin of the realm. In the man of our example's case, laguishing in the debtor's prison, that coin would be the American currency; in humanity's case, the coin of the realm is blood. Not just any blood: man's blood. That is the price for mankind — human blood for human souls. For our redemption to be possible, Christ must be both divine and human. And so it is — the identity of Christ: pure of soul, infinite of being, and human of substance.

Victory in Jesus – Victory over Sin
“Victory in Jesus” is an exciting topic to explore! Just saying those three words should bring joy to your heart. As a believer, what victory do we have in Jesus?

None of us deserve forgiveness, but that is the amazing thing about grace! God loves us so much that He willingly took our sins to Calvary and nailed them to the cross. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” He bore the burdens of my sin that day -- my sin, and yours -- so that we may have victory in Jesus through the blood that He shed on the cross. Jesus is waiting and willing to forgive you of your sins!

It doesn’t stop there, however. Not only does He stand ready to forgive, He also forgets your sins! He graciously wipes the slate clean, transforms your heart and mind, and gives you the Holy Spirit to guide you.

Victory in Jesus – Victory over Death and Life Challenges
Praise GOD! Jesus was not defeated that day at Calvary! Satan had his moment of gloating only to be defeated the moment Jesus rose out of the tomb! Death was not the end. . .but only the beginning of what would be the most glorious victory for all! John 11:25 says, “. . .I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies.”

As believers we do not have to be afraid of death! We know we have an eternal home in Heaven with the Savior. He has gone to prepare a place for us. His promises are true and eternal. As the Apostle Paul stated, “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.”

We can experience peace and joy in the midst of trials and difficulties that will come our way. John 16:33 says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Victory in Jesus – The Hymn
Eugene Monroe Bartlett Senior was born on Christmas Eve of 1885. He wrote the words to this hymn -- his last song -- in 1939. Mr. Bartlett was well known as a gospel singer, writer, teacher, editor, and publisher. He was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1979.

The words from this well-known and cherished hymn remind us that we can experience victory in Jesus every day of our lives.

If you don’t know Him as Savior and Lord, seek Him. He stands ready to extend His gift of eternal life, and provide victory over sin and death!

I heard an old, old story,
How a Savior came from glory,
How He gave His life on Calvary
    To save a wretch like me;
    I heard about His groaning,
    Of His precious blood's atoning,
    Then I repented of my sins;
    And won the victory.

    Chorus:
    O victory in Jesus,
    My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
    With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him,
And all my love is due Him,
    He plunged me to victory,
    Beneath the cleansing flood.

    I heard about His healing,
    Of His cleansing power revealing.
How He made the lame to walk again
    And caused the blind to see;
And then I cried, "Dear Jesus,
Come and heal my broken spirit,"
And somehow Jesus came and brought
    To me the victory.

    Chorus.

    I heard about a mansion
He has built for me in glory.
And I heard about the streets of gold
    Beyond the crystal sea;
    About the angels singing,
    And the old redemption story,
And some sweet day I'll sing up there
    The song of victory.

    Chorus.

Jesus Paid It All – What does this mean?
Believing Jesus paid it all is at the foundation of Christianity. It is based on the faith that God sent Jesus Christ as His Son to earth and that Jesus was crucified on a cross and rose to life again to pay the debt for sin. This was His purpose. We have all sinned against God and He provided the only way for atonement.

Jesus was sent as our Savior to pay this debt. God offers this gift for each of us and all we must do is accept His grace and forgiveness. In doing this, we acknowledge that Jesus is Lord, has taken on our debt and paid it all for us. This realization inspired one of the longest-standing hymns of all time.

Jesus Paid it All – The Lyrics
The words to the song “Jesus Paid It All” was written by Elvina Hall in 1865. Being prompted by his wife, John T. Grape wrote the score. However it was Grape’s Pastor, Rev. George W. Schrek who believed the score and Hall’s words should be paired together. The song appeared in a hymnal for the first time in 1868.

Excerpts from Jesus Paid It All

      I hear the Savior say
      Thy strength indeed is small
      Child of weakness....watch and pray
Find in me....thine all in all

      Chorus:
      Jesus paid it all
      All to Him I owe
Sin hath left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow

      Lord, now indeed I find
      Thy power and Thine alone
      Can change the leper's spots
And melt the heart of stone

      For nothing good have I
      Whereby Thy grace to claim
      I'll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calvary's Lamb

      And when before thy throne
      I stand in Him complete
Jesus died my soul to save
      My lips shall still repeat

Jesus Paid It All - Scriptures that may have inspired this hymn
“‘Come now, let us reason together,’ says the LORD. ‘Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool’” (
    Isaiah 1:18).

“He must become greater; I must become less” (
    John 3:30).

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him” (
    John 3:16-17).

Dishonesty (or the sin of theft and of injustice)
    By Jonathan Edwards

Dishonesty Or THE SIN OF THEFT AND OF INJUSTICE Dated July, 1740. Exodus 20:15 Thou shalt not steal. Subject: An unjust usurping of our neighbor’s property without his consent is forbidden by the eighth commandment. This is one of the ten commandments which constitute a summary of man’s duty, as revealed by God. God made many revelations to the children of Israel in the wilderness by Moses. But this made in the ten commandments is the chief. Most of those other revelations contained ceremonial or judicial laws; but this contains the moral law. The most of those other laws ...read more

Mr. John Bunyan's Dying Sayings - OF THE TORMENTS OF HELL.
    By John Bunyan

Heaven and salvation are not surely more promised to the godly, than hell and damnation is threatened to and executed on the wicked. When once a man is damned, he may bid adieu to all pleasures. O! who knows the power of God's wrath.? none but damned ones. Sinners' company are the devil and his angels, tormented in everlasting fire with a curse. Hell would be a kind of paradise if it were no worse than the worst of this world.

As different as grief is from joy, as torment from, rest, as terror from peace; so different is the state of sinners from that of saints in the world to come.

    UNFOLDING THE ROSE

A young, new preacher was walking with an older, more seasoned preacher in the garden one day and feeling a bit insecure about what God had for him to do, he was inquiring of the older preacher. The older preacher walked up to a rosebush and handed the young preacher a rosebud and told him to open it without tearing off any petals.

The young preacher looked in disbelief at the older preacher and was trying to figure out what a rosebud could possibly have to do with his wanting to know the WILL OF GOD for his life and for his ministry. Because of his high respect for the older preacher, he proceeded to TRY to unfold the rose, while keeping every petal intact...It wasn't long before he realized how impossible it was to do so.

Noticing the younger preacher's inability to unfold the rosebud while keeping it intact, the older preacher began to recite the following poem...

    Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

It is only a tiny rosebud,

    A flower of God's design;

But I cannot unfold the petals

With these clumsy hands of mine.

    Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

    The secret of unfolding flowers

Is not known to such as I.

GOD opens this flower so sweetly,

When in my hands they fade and die.

    Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

If I cannot unfold a rosebud,

    This flower of God's design,

Then how can I think I have wisdom

To unfold this life of mine?

    Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

So I'll trust in Him for His leading

    Each moment of every day.

I will look to him for His guidance

Each step of the pilgrim way.

    Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The pathway that lies before me,

    Only my Heavenly Father knows.

I'll trust Him to unfold the moments,

Just as He unfolds the rose.

PROBABLY THE MOST LOVED and best known devotional, millions of Christians have been blessed by Spurgeon's writings, every day for over a hundred years.

    C.H. Spurgeon's Morning Devotional
    Saturday July 7, 2007
"Brethren, pray for us."-1 Thessalonians 5:25

This one morning in the year we reserved to refresh the reader's memory upon the subject of prayer for ministers, and we do most earnestly implore every Christian household to grant the fervent request of the text first uttered by an apostle and now repeated by us. Brethren, our work is Solemnly momentous, involving weal or woe to thousands; we treat with souls for God on eternal business, and our word is either a savour of life unto life, or of death unto death. A very heavy responsibility rests upon us, and it will be no small mercy if at the last we be found clear of the blood of all men. As officers in Christ's army, we are the especial mark of the enmity of men and devils; they watch for our halting, and labour to take us by the heels. Our sacred calling involves us in temptations from which you are exempt, above all it too often draws us away from our personal enjoyment of truth into a ministerial and official consideration of it. We meet with many knotty cases, and our wits are at a non plus; we observe very sad backslidings, and our hearts are wounded; we see millions perishing, and our spirits sink. We wish to profit you by our preaching; we desire to be blest to your children; we long to be useful both to saints and sinners; therefore, dear friends, intercede for us with our God. Miserable men are we if we miss the aid of your prayers, but happy are we if we live in your supplications. You do not look to us but to our Master for spiritual blessings, and yet how many times has He given those blessings through His ministers; ask then, again and again, that we may be the earthen vessels into which the Lord may put the treasure of the gospel. We, the whole company of missionaries, ministers, city missionaries, and students, do in the name of Jesus beseech you "BRETHREN, PRAY FOR US."

HIS IS a book that will never die -- one of the great English classics. . . . Reprinted here in its most complete form, it brings to life the days when "a noble army, men and boys, the matron and the maid," "climbed the steep ascent of heaven, 'mid peril, toil, and pain."

"After the Bible itself, no book so profoundly influenced early Protestant sentiment as the Book of Martyrs. Even in our time it is still a living force. It is more than a record of persecution. It is an arsenal of controversy, a storehouse of romance, as well as a source of edification."

    Sketches of Church History.

An in depth chronology of the Church from AD 33 to the Reformation.

OHN BUNYAN was born in 1628 at Elstow near Bedford, the son of a brazier. Between 1644 and 1647 he served in the Parliamentary army; returning to Elstow to follow his father's trade, he underwent a deep spiritual crisis that lasted for several years. In about 1653 he joined an independent church in Bedford and before long began to preach and to publish polemical and doctrinal religious works. In 1660, following the Restoration, he was arrested and, on his refusal to stop preaching, was held in Bedford gaol for the next twelve years. While in prison, he published several books, the most important being his spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners (1666), and also began to write The Pilgrim's Progress (1678). On his release from prison in 1672 Bunyan became pastor of the Bedford congregation and the remaining years of his life were spent preaching and writing. The best-known of his later works are The Life and Death of Mr. Badman (1680), The Holy War (1682) and the second part of The Pilgrim's Progress (1684) He died in 1688 and was buried in Bunhill Fields.

    Grace Abounding
Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, written during this imprisonment, is the spiritual autobiography of Bunyan, the traveling tinker who became the eminent preacher and author

    The Pilgrim Progress
Bunyan wrote The Pilgrim's Progress, in two parts, of which the first appeared at London in 1678, begun during his imprisonment in 1676; the second in 1684. An allegory of Christian's journey from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City, it is written in a prose that unites biblical eloquence with the clarity of common speech, and is the most successful allegory ever written. It is indeed commonly translated by Protestant missionaries after the Bible. It is this read in all literary languages and is a worldclassic.

    The Holy War
John Bunyan wrote this book sometime during the first six years of his incarceration in Bedford Prison. It was first published six years before John Bunyan's death

    The Life Of John Bunyan
The Life of John Bunyan, by Edmund Venables

Our earliest extensively preserved Latin Christian author [140-230], who aligned himself around 207 with the "Montanist" Christian movement that was considered "heretical" by the representatives of emerging mainstream Christianity

    St. Augustine
The Confessions of St. Augustine -- The most popular work of the man who more than any other shaped western civilization. The first 10 chapters constitute a spiritual autobiography and some spiritual and philosophical reflections; the last three chapters are a reflection on the creation story of Genesis 1.
    John Bunyan
Pilgrim's Progress -- A spiritual allegory. Of books written in English, one of the all-time most popular.

    G. K. Chesterton
Orthodoxy -- Chesterton's writing reminds me of C.S. Lewis, but a little more colorful, a little more quirky. This book is an apology for the Christian world-view.

    Jonathan Edwards
Religious Affections -- "What is the nature of true religion? . . . [What are] the distinguishing notes of that virtue and holiness that is acceptable in the sight of God?" In this classic work by America's greatest theologian and philosopher, Edwards considers the nature of revival and the genuine work of the Holy Spirit. Don't read this book if you want to keep worshipping your idols.

    George Fox
Autobiography of George Fox -- This is a fascinating journal of the exploits of the founder of the Society of Friends (Quakers). It is also very illuminating about the political and religious state of seventeenth century England -- for example, Fox lives through the commonwealth period, meets Cromwell, and prophesies his downfall after he treats Quakers badly.

    St. Ignatius of Loyola
The Spiritual Exercises Spiritual exercises arranged into 4 weeks, by the founder of the Jesuits.

    St. John of the Cross
Dark Night of the Soul -- The writings of St. John of the Cross are unsurpassed for mystical theology. The "dark night" is a must-read for anyone seriously concerned about growing spiritually.

    Thomas à Kempis
The Imitation of Christ -- This book is said to have been published in more editions than any other, apart from the Bible, with 6000 appearing by the turn of this century. This little devotional book is simply written but immensely moving. Highly recommended.

    William Law
A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life -- This is one of two or three books that greatly influenced the young J. Wesley.

    Brother Lawrence
The Practice of the Presence of God -- In this little collection of letters and reflections, Brother Lawrence encourages us to be continually in God's presence.

Where Should I Go to Church?
           from Dose of Truth

There is no doubt that the desire of God in His Word is that the church gather together corporately. The very definition of the word church (ekklesia) implies that we assemble ourselves together. The word was used generally to mean, "A gathering of citizens called out from their homes into some public place, an assembly"…
